Free Brochure Offers Path for Visitors to Cal Poly’s Leaning Pine Arboretum
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Visitors to Cal Poly’s five-acre Leaning Pine
Arboretum can now enjoy a self-guided tour using a new, free “Garden
Walk” brochure.
The brochure is available at the entrance to the arboretum and at the
Poly Plant shop, both located at the Environmental Horticultural Science
unit at the top of Via Carta on campus. The recently published brochure
was made possible by a generous grant from the California Horticultural
Society, said arboretum Director and Cal Poly Horticulture and Crop
Science Professor Emeritus Tom Eltzroth.
The “Garden Walk” brochure includes a map of the Leaning
Pine Arboretum
and descriptions of 22 numbered stops on the self-guided tour path. The
route includes all the arboretum’s major gardens, which feature
plants
from California, South Africa, the Mediterranean basin, and Australia,
as well as the arboretum’s palm and aloe collection and its garden
of
primitive plants.
Most of the Garden Walk follows the main garden path, which is easily
accessible. “The entire tour takes about 90 minutes but can be done
at
any pace, and there are several rest stops available along the route,”
Eltzroth said. The self-guided Garden Walk tour “is perfect for
individuals or small groups,” of which the arboretum gets quite
a few,
Eltzroth said.
The Leaning Pine Arboretum is the Central Coast’s premier horticultural
display garden, said Eltzroth. Planted in its garden are hundreds of
unique and intriguing plants from the world’s five Mediterranean
climate
regions, along with extensive collections of palms, dwarf and unusual
conifers, and plants from New Zealand.
The arboretum is part of Cal Poly’s Horticulture and Crop Science
Department and is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. and closed Sundays and academic holidays. Admission is free
and parking on campus is free on Saturdays.
