Cal Poly Architecture Students To Hold Benefit Art Show

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Artwork by Cal Poly architecture students will be on display Jan. 21-23, celebrating student creativity outside of the expected realm of architectural design. Visitors will see crafted jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, paintings and work in other media.

Organized by students of Cal Poly’s Architecture Department, the show will be in the Gallery of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design Building.

“For many of the students, this will be the first time they have ever displayed their work,” said Min Ying Zhao, a third-year architecture student and coordinator of the show. “Some are stretching their artistic skills to gain new experiences. Visitors will see a refreshing blend, ranging from early works of students just beginning their careers to the creations of a ceramic artist of 20 years transitioning her occupation to become an architect.”

The students have decided to dedicate the show to fellow classmate Emily Alstot, who was recently killed in a car accident. A fund is being created in her memory. In conjunction with the show, visitors can bid on art in a silent auction held throughout the three-day event, as well as purchase bake-sale items on the opening night.

“All of the proceeds will benefit the Emily Nicole Alstot Memorial Fund,” said Jennifer Krack, a third-year architecture student and organizer of the bake sale. “We wanted to celebrate Emily’s wonderful spirit and would like to invite the local community and campus members to join us.”

The free show opens on Jan. 21 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. It continues Jan. 22 and 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the silent-auction bidding closing on the final day at 3 p.m.
