UU Gallery Exhibit of Body Awareness to Run Through March 29
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly's Associated Students Inc. (ASI) Events presents
Body '04, an exhibit in the UU Gallery from Feb. 23-March 29. The exhibit's
grand opening will be 5-7:30 p.m.Feb. 23 in the UU Gallery located in
the Epicenter.
The grand opening features a slide show lecture by Cal Poly Professor
Joanne Ruggles, Ph.D., about beauty ideals and the human figure. The second
part of the evening includes an interactive group art activity led by
Cal Poly student and Women's Center spokesperson Erin Partridge. Participation
is encouraged, and free refreshments will be served.
The Body '04 UU Gallery display is co-sponsored by the Cal Poly Women's
Center and is one of the many events the Women's Center will organize
the week of February 23. The artwork explores the human body and forms
it takes in various art mediums. The gallery exhibit will develop awareness
of the body and eating disorders through figure drawing, paintings, photography,
installation pieces, and an interactive exhibit
featuring poetry, mixed media, collage and photographs by student participants.
Participating artists include Matt Calkins with oil paintings, Leonard
Bessemer with pastels, Holly Peterson with photography and life drawing,
and Erin Partridge with painting, mixed media and collage. Others artists
include Jonathan Mitro and Alli Riegel with acrylic, and Natalie Mathews
with oil on wood.
The Women's Center and exhibit participants describe Body '04 as "A
week dedicated to a healthy respect for your body and relationship with
yourself. Discover how good it feels to be happy with who you are."
The exhibit is free and can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through
Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. The UU Gallery is located on
the second floor of the University Union in the Epicenter.
