Red Holloway to Perform With Cal Poly Jazz Bands
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Legendary jazz saxophonist, and Cambria resident,
Red Holloway will headline Cal Poly’s annual Just Jazz concert at
8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, in Harman Hall in the Christopher Cohan Center.
Holloway will perform with the University Jazz Band #1, led by Jazz Studies
Director Paul Rinzler.
According to John Corbett of the Chicago Reader, “Holloway’s
brand of gritty, sweat-streaked, bluesy tenor saxophone is an essential
ingredient in soul jazz” and helped make him one of busiest jazz
musicians in the United States and internationally.
Holloway has performed with Billie Holiday, Sonny Rollins and Lester Young
and had a long partnership with Sonny Stitt.
Holloway and the University Jazz Band #1 will perform arrangements of
works by Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, John Clayton, and Cole Porter, plus
Cab Calloway's crowd-pleaser “Minnie the Moocher.”
Also appearing will be the Cal Poly Vocal Jazz, directed by Professor
Thomas Davies, and the University Jazz Band #2 and Cal Poly Jazz Combo,
both directed by Rinzler.
Tickets to Just Jazz range from $5 to $15 and can be bought at the Performing
Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787).
The Just Jazz concert is sponsored by the Cal Poly Music Department, College
of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program.
