Cal Poly Names Interim Athletics Director

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly Senior Associate Athletics Director Alison
E. Cone has been named the Interim Athletics Director, Interim Provost
Robert Detweiler announced this morning.

Cone has served as Cal Poly’s Senior Associate Athletics Director since
1994. During that time she has overseen the Athletics Department’s NCAA
compliance program and served as department liaison for NCAA
certification. She has also served as a member of the department’s
management team, administering the department’s letter-of-intent program
and athletics scholarship budgets. Currently, Cone serves as the Big
West Conference representative on the NCAA Management Council and two
other NCAA subcommittees (Governance and Legislative Review).

Prior to joining Cal Poly’s Athletics Department, Cone was the director
of athletics academic services at Washington State University. Cone
earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from WSU, a teaching
certificate from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, and a
master’s degree in education from Cal State Dominguez Hills. She has
been coaching and teaching since 1975.

“I’m excited to be working through this interim period with an
exceptional and hard-working group of staff and coaches,” Cone said of
her latest assignment at Cal Poly.

“We’re very fortunate to have Ms. Cone on board,” said Detweiler. “She
truly has the athletes at heart and we are all extremely confident that
our athletics program is in good hands.”

The university is conducting a national search for a new athletics
director. A consultative committee, including faculty, staff and
students, is being established.

Detweiler said Cal Poly hopes to conclude the search by the close of the
academic year.
