Cal Poly Choirs’ Winter Concert Feb. 21 to Feature Music From Around the World

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Cal Poly Choirs will present their annual Winter Concert featuring music from around the world as well as American classics at 8 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Christopher Cohan Center’s Harman Hall.

Music Professor Thomas Davies will lead the ensembles. He will be assisted by staff accompanists Patrick Christians, Paul Woodring and Susan Azaret Davies.

The University Singers will open the program with the “Kyrie” and “Gloria” from Paul Bassler’s “Missa Kenya,” as well as music from Colombia and Israel.

PolyPhonics will present the program the ensemble plans to perform at the American Choral Directors Association Western Division Convention in Las Vegas on Feb. 26. The 25-minute program includes works by Johns Nickson, Jan Sweelinck, James MacMillan, Craig Kingsbury, Stephen Chatman and Ron Kean.

Cal Poly Vocal Jazz members will perform pieces they plan to present at Carnegie Hall as part of the Phil Mattson Vocal Jazz Workshop April 2-6. Titles include “I’m Beginning to See the Light,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Lady Be Good.”
In addition to the large ensembles, Cal Poly’s barbershop quartets will also perform.

Tickets cost $6 to $11 and can be bought at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787).
