Hispanic Outlook Names Cal Poly a 'Publisher's Pick'

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education has again
included Cal Poly in its latest "Publisher's Picks" list, an annual list
of American colleges and universities that the publication believes have
solid records in recruiting, enabling and graduating Hispanic students.

The standings are based on formal and informal inquires as well as data
from the National Center for Education Statistics. Cal Poly was one of
19 California State University campuses to receive the designation. The
CSU is the most diverse higher education institution in the nation, with
ethnic minorities making up more than half (53 percent) of its
identified student body. Hispanics make up nearly a quarter of the total
CSU student population. The CSU annually confers 58 percent of the
state's bachelor's degrees earned by Hispanics.

"The California State University is proud to be highlighted in Hispanic
Outlook," said CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed. "Our responsibility is to
provide access to California's best and brightest students, and to
provide them with the opportunity of a quality education and an
excellent start in a fulfilling career. The California State University
is the gateway to success for many of these first-generation
college-goers."

The California State University is the largest system of senior higher
education in the country, with 23 campuses, nearly 400,000 students and
44,000 faculty and staff. Since the system was created in 1961, it has
awarded about 2 million degrees. The CSU is renowned for the quality of
its teaching and for the job-ready graduates it produces. Its mission is
to provide high-quality, affordable education to meet the ever-changing
needs of the people of California.
