Cal Poly Free Enterprise Student Team Named Regional Champions
SAN LUIS OBISPO – A team of students from Cal Poly’s Orfalea
College of
Business has been named regional champions and is now heading to the
national finals in the collegiate Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE)
competition in May.
The Cal Poly SIFE team of 10 business seniors competed in a regional
competition in early April in Los Angeles. The team completed a series
of nine projects during fall and winter quarters in preparation for the
April competitions. Topics included business, economics, and free
enterprise issues.
The team presented four of their nine projects in front of a panel
judges comprised of business and corporate leaders. The Cal Poly SIFE
team competed against teams from Cal Poly Pomona, UC Irvine, Pepperdine
University, and Azusa Pacific University. In addition to taking first
place, judges awarded the Cal Poly team the “Rookie of the Year”
trophy.
This was the first year that Cal Poly fielded a SIFE team and entered
the competition, explained team coach and Business Professor Norm Borin.
Team members are Jeremy Johnson, Nick Erlandson, Lauren Quaid, Kristina
Ross, Pedro Vazquez, Mandy Gill, Shiran Chi, Aimee Frank, and Leticia
Soto, and Mina Malek.
“In their very first year on campus, the rookie Cal Poly SIFE team
took
regional competition by storm,” said Professor Borin.
The team is now seeking donations and funding to help raise $4,000 pay
for the trip to the national finals May 23-25 in Kansas City, Miss.
“We never expected to make it to the nationals in our first year
out, so
the trip to Kansas City wasn’t anticipated,” said team member
Pedro
Vasquez. “We’d appreciate any help we can get.”
