Construction Sciences Forum April 29-May 1 to Focus on 'Green' Concepts
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- With a theme of “Intervene, Think Green,” Cal Poly's 6th Annual Construction Sciences Forum, scheduled for April 29-May 1, will focus on the concepts of sustainable building.
Sponsored by the Construction Specifications Institute club of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, most of the forum's events are open to the public and will be held in the Gallery (Room 105) of the Architecture and Environmental Design Building.
The forum begins at 7 p.m. April 29 in the Rotunda (Room 213) of the Business Building with a keynote address titled “Architects Pollute." Speaker Ed Mazria of Santa Fe, N.M., will discuss architects' impact on the environment.
Mazria has earned numerous honors and awards for his work, including American Institute of Architects design awards, a Commercial Building Award from the Department of Energy, a Pioneer Award from the American Solar Energy Society and an Outstanding Planning Award from the American Planning Association.
On April 30, the schedule includes a product show and three, one-hour presentations between noon and 5 p.m. on sustainable concepts. A barbecue dinner is set for 6 p.m., followed by a roundtable discussion at 7:30 p.m.
May 1 features a student sandcastle-design competition from 9 a.m. to noon on the lawn in front of the Dexter Building, a lunch and closing speaker Ken Radtkey of Blackbird Architects in Santa Barbara.
Tickets for the April 30 barbecue cost $20 for professionals and faculty members and $5 for students and can be bought at a student table in the Architecture Building stair court or at the door.
