POLYLINK PHOTO OF THE YEAR
The Hills Are Alive
Alumna Lisa Marrone (B.S., Natural Resources Management, 1980) is the 2009 PolyLink Alumni Photo of the Year Winner for this shot of spring wildflowers on the Carrisa Plains northeast of San Luis Obispo.
“I took it in spring of 1998, after the heavy 1997 El Niño rain season. It’s off Highway 58 east of Elkhorn Road,” she said.
The wildflower shot received 341 out of 550 votes cast by alumni in the PolyLink Photo of the Year competition.
Marrone lives in San Luis Obispo County. She retired at 50 as a battalion chief from Cal Fire in December 2008 to pursue recreation, philanthropy, networking with friends and financial management. She’s just one of the more than 14,500 alumni members of PolyLink – and she’s willing to mentor other alumni and students in PolyLink.
Her career advice? “Educate yourself in the important things of life, not what the masses do.” Her wildflower photography advice? “When the newspapers report the wildflower show every year at Shell Creek Road on Highway 58, the flowers are typically starting up at Carrisa Plains.”
You can find more photos from Marrone on her PolyLink page; he’s one of the 800 alumni who have uploaded thousands of photos to their PolyLink photo albums (login required).
Alumni upload photos daily, and the PolyLink editors chose one as the Photo of the Month winner. (Marrone won for March 2009). Each fall, PolyLink alumni vote on which of the 12 shots should be the Photo of the Year winner (login required).
Everyone can see the Photo of the Month winners anytime in the PolyLink University Photos Gallery (www.calpolylink.com/photogalleries).
