Cal Poly Rose Parade Float a Double Winner in 2010
“Jungle Cuts,” the float built by students and volunteers from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the university’s sister campus in Pomona, captured two awards at the 2010 Rose Parade Jan. 1 in Pasadena. Rose Parade judges gave the float the Bob Hope Humor Trophy. And on Jan. 2, the Tournament of Roses and KTLA TV in Los Angeles announced that the Cal Poly float had once again captured the annual Viewers' Choice Award. The float featured a lion getting a perm, a giraffe getting a beehive, and a zebra styling it out with a slick mohawk. The animation incorporated into the float included a toucan flying around a tree, monkeys dangling from trees, a giraffe climbing a tree, and an actual working waterfall.

Employee Separation Policy Reminder
Human Resources asks that departments notify Human Resources or Academic Personnel immediately upon knowledge that an employee will separate from the university in order to meet legal requirements for settlement pay (Labor Code Sections 201 and 202). All employees must complete a Form PR 300, Employee Separation Form. Additionally, for employees who are resigning, staff and management must complete the Form HR 191, Employee Notice of Resignation. Academic employees must submit a letter of resignation to the appropriate department head/chair. Separation forms are available on the Human Resources Web site at http://www.afd.calpoly.edu/hr/forms.asp?form=20#separation. For more information regarding employee separation, call Human Resources at ext. 6-2236 or Academic Personnel at ext. 6-2844.
Federal Work-Study Update
Because of a significant drop in federal funding in the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program, there are a limited number of students with FWS funds. We regret that no additional FWS awards will be made this academic year. Increases in existing Federal Work-Study awards will be limited. FWS was awarded to applicants with a high need who filed a FAFSA application before the March 2 deadline. Be sure to encourage students to complete the 2010-11 FAFSA now at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Because we were unable to grant additional requests for FWS in 2009-10, students on the FWS waiting list will be given priority for FWS in 2010-11, provided they meet the need requirements and file their FAFSA before the upcoming March 2 deadline.

Staff Representative Sought for Presidential Search Advisory Committee
A search will soon be under way to find a successor to President Baker. A request was received from the Chancellor's Office for the name of one elected staff representative to serve on Presidential Search Advisory Committee.
The California State University Board of Trustees policy for the selection of presidents specifies that one university staff member be elected to serve on the search advisory committee, known as the Advisory Committee to the Trustees Committee for the Selection of the President (ACTCSP). For this assignment, a staff member is defined as a represented or confidential employee. The name and contact information for the staff's elected member must be submitted to Chancellor Reed by Jan. 20.
The ACTCSP will convene Feb. 9 at Cal Poly for a brief organizational meeting. The remainder of the committee activities will occur in April and May. While most of these activities will be at Cal Poly, some travel may be required.
As indicated in the Board of Trustees Policy, the campus support staff representative is to be elected by the staff. Staff members interested in becoming a nominee for the campus support staff representative must submit the following:
1. A statement, not to exceed 200 words, indicating how he or she interprets the role and responsibility of representing the Cal Poly staff as a member of the ACTCSP, including any applicable experience or background that may apply. This statement will be included with the ballot material.
2. A nominating petition signed by 20 current Cal Poly staff employees. Eligible signatories may not sign nomination petitions for more than one candidate.
The above completed information must be received by Barbara Melvin, executive director for Human Resources, Administration Building Room 110, no later than Wednesday, Jan 6. Ballots and information on the voting process to elect the staff representative will be available shortly thereafter. Questions can be directed to Human Resources at 6-2236.

Cal Poly’s Home Page Has a New Look
The Cal Poly University Home Page (www.calpoly.edu) has a new look. The new design includes more photos, graphics, stories and links. It’s part of an ongoing university effort to promote Cal Poly to alumni, parents, prospective students, university supporters and the community at large. You’ll still find links to the pages you need – such as the A-Z Directory, Maps and the MyCalPoly Portal. You’ll also find more features, photos and links to fun Cal Poly pages such as the Center for Coastal Marine Sciences, Cal Poly Creamery, and more.
The “new” home page uses the “Splash Page” template designed by ITS. It’s among the set of Cal Poly Web Page templates that are ADA-compliant and free for use to any college, department, office or other “official” Cal Poly Web site. Find out more about the templates – and download them free – at www.warc.calpoly.edu.
The Public Affairs Office is working with ITS on the “new” Cal Poly Home Page look. Public Affairs will provide fresh headlines, spotlight features and multimedia presentations regularly. For guidelines about what kinds of stories, links and photos can appear on the “new” Cal Poly Home Page, visit www.publicaffairs.calpoly.edu.
