Woman playing volleyballWomen's volleyball advances to 'NCAA Sweet 16'
The Cal Poly women's volleyball team beat Xavier and Purdue and has advanced to the Stanford Regional of the 2007 NCAA Tournament - a feat last achieved in 1985! With one of the most memorable seasons in its 29-year history, the team will face the top-seeded Cardinals (29-2) when action at the Stanford Regional gets underway Friday, Dec. 7 in Maples Pavilion. Come and support the Mustangs!

The Organic Farm takes a two-week operations break from Dec. 24 to Jan. 7. Harvests and weekly deliveries resume Jan. 14. Winter commencement ceremonies are set for Saturday, Dec. 8, in the Rec Center. Separate ceremony times are: 9 a.m., Orfalea College of Business and College of Engineering; 1 p.m., College of Architecture and Environmental Design and College of Liberal Arts; 4 p.m., College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, College of Education, and College of Science and Mathematics. Each ceremony will last approximately 2 hours and is followed by a punch and cookie reception held in the fitness room adjacent to the Rec Center.

photo of poinsettiasPoly Plant Shop 'Poinsettia Specular' runs through Dec. 15
Poly Plant Shop's annual poinsettia sale, featuring more than 2,500 plants in 27 different varieties and colors, continues through Dec. 15. The plants are grown by students involved in the university's Poinsettia Agriculture Enterprise Project, which begins in the spring of every year. This year's poinsettia project offers an assortment of reds, whites, pinks, and other novelty varieties such as Jingle Bells and Marbles. Plant sizes range from a few inches to four feet tall. Offerings include traditional, centerpiece, and tree-shaped forms. Prices range from $6 to $60.

Cal Poly Report schedule for academic holiday
The last Cal Poly Report of 2007 will be published on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Cal Poly Report will resume its weekly schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

Faculty reminder to submit course reserve materials for winter quarter
Faculty members should submit course reserve materials as soon as possible to avoid delays in making the material available to students. Reserve materials and faculty submission forms should be brought to the station located in the circulation area of Kennedy Library.

The course reserves unit processes requests in the order received. For more information, contact Donna Lister, coordinator for course reserves, at ext. 6-5760 or dlister@calpoly.edu.

Important information on PeopleSoft upgrade, forum set for Dec. 11
CMS PeopleSoft Users (Human Resources and Student Administration Only) are encouraged to attend an open forum, sponsored by ITS, on details of what to expect during the Peoplesoft upgrade, scheduled to begin Friday, Jan. 18.  The forum will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Christopher Cohan Center, Room 124. The current Human Resources and Student Administration systems will become unavailable from 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 until the end of January. During the outage, a view only version will be available. For more information related to the student administration system, contact Kimi Ikeda at kikeda@calpoly.edu. Cal Poly’s Kennedy Library will close from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11 for its annual employee holiday party. photo of tom leeLongtime Cal Poly coach, Hall of Famer Tom Lee passes away at age 90
Tom Lee, who coached boxing, baseball, football and basketball for decades at Cal Poly, passed away at his home in San Luis Obispo Nov. 29, surrounded by family members. Lee, father of current Mustang baseball coach Larry Lee, was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990. He celebrated his 90th birthday with family members on Nov. 6. He was perhaps best known for coaching the Mustang boxing team from 1952-61, producing one national champion, five Pacific Coast Intercollegiate champions and 25 NCAA Boxing Coaches Association champions. Lee was considered one of the top coaches in the nation and held boxing clinics internationally as well. A memorial service in his honor is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Old Mission Church in San Luis Obispo.

William “Bill” Avery (Oct. 20, 1945 – Nov. 22, 2007)
Bill Avery, equipment technician in materials engineering since 2001, died peacefully at his home on Nov. 22 after a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services were held on Nov. 28 at the First Presbyterian Church in San Luis Obispo. Bill will be remembered throughout the university community for his quiet nature and big heart. Donations may be sent to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast or the First Presbyterian Church of San Luis Obispo.

Carnegie Mellon teaching expert shares research on campus Dec. 7
Marsha Lovett, associate director of the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and associate research professor in the Psychology Department at Carnegie Mellon University, will be on campus Friday, Dec. 7, to share her experiences with faculty and staff on how students learn. In her talk, Lovett will discuss several research-based principles of effective student learning and review several studies aimed at evaluating online and hybrid (i.e., online plus face-to-face) instructional environments, interpreting the studies' results in the context of the learning principles. Lovett will also present results from an accelerated learning study that she recently conducted in which a traditional and a hybrid course in introductory statistics were compared. The presentation will be from 11 a.m. to noon, with a question and answer session from 1:45 to 3 p.m., in Fisher Science, Room 285.
